John T. Way – Founder
John Way (also known as J.T. Way) founded AMA in 2005 and serves as the leader of the institution. John received his Ph.D. from Yale University, has earned M.A. degrees from Yale and Tulane Universities. His forthcoming book, The Mayan in the Mall: Development, Globalization and The Making of Modern Guatemala (Duke University Press) covers culture and globalization in Guatemala during the 20th century. John has won Fulbright, Mellon Foundation and Yale Center for International and Area Studies grants. He has taught in various elementary, junior high and high school programs, and at LaGuardia Community College, Tulane University and Yale University in the USA. John is currently a member of the team of directors at CIRMA (the Center for Mesoamerican Research) in Antigua, Guatemala, where he directs the University of Arizona Study Abroad Program, works as history professor, and develops and academically directs new programs in higher education. Education and love of learning are John's passions, and every day he's thankful to be living in Guatemala and building AMA.
John Way (apodo J.T., en inglés) fundó el AMA en el 2005 y es el líder de la institución. John obtuvo su Doctorado en la Universidad de Yale, y también cuenta con dos títulos de Maestría de las universidades de Yale y Tulane. Su libro, en vías de publicación con la Editorial de la Universidad de Duke, se llama The Mayan in the Mall: Development, Globalization and The Making of Modern Guatemala, se trata de la cultura y la globalización en Guatemala durante el siglo XX. John ha sido premiado con becas Fulbright, Mellon y Yale Center for International and Area Studies. Liz Gonzalez – Administrative Director, High School Language Arts
Liz has more than seventeen years of teaching experience. She served her first three years here at AMA as the Head of Faculty, and last year became its new Administrative Director. She has a Masters of Science in Teaching from New School University in New York City and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She’s taught in New York and Baltimore, as well as right here in Guatemala—in Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, where she and her husband Rubén founded an English language academy.
The mother of three, an avid cook and reader, and a native of New York City, Liz is a creative teacher who fosters a sense of independence, responsibility and accountability in both the school in general, and the classroom.
Liz tiene más de 17 años de experiencia docente. Después de 3 años trabajando como maestra encargada de la facultad, el año pasado trabajó como la Directora Administrativa del colegio. Cuenta con una Maestría en Pedagogía de la universidad “New School” en Nueva York y una Licenciatura en Literatura de la Universidad de Michigan en Ann Arbor. Ha enseñado en Nueva York y Baltimore, y también aquí en Guatemala, en Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, en donde ella y su esposo Rubén fundaron una academia de inglés.
Liz es madre de tres hijos y es originaria de la ciudad de Nueva York. Ella es una maestra creativa que desarrolla un sentido de independencia y responsabilidad en su aula y en toda la escuela.
Elizabeth Dequine – Co-Director, Guidance Counselor, Junior High School Language Arts
Elizabeth Dequine joins the AMA staff this year as Co-Director, Guidance Counselor and Language Arts teacher. She comes to AMA from Bainbridge Island in Washington State, where she has worked for the past 18 years as a school counselor and school psychologist. She holds a Master’s in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Colorado and a Master of Fine Arts in Child Drama as well as school certification from the University of Washington. She has a strong interest in multicultural education and in Central America; four years ago she traveled from Bainbridge Island to the Island of Ometepe, Nicaragua in a Volkswagon camper van. During that trip, she stopped in Panajachel to study Spanish and has wanted to return ever since. In addition to counseling and school psychology, she has worked in children’s theatre, drama therapy, crisis intervention, parent education, adventure learning and spiritual guidance. On Bainbridge Island, she has a small organic farm where she raised her two sons, now ages 22 and 27.
Elizabeth Dequine vino a AMA este año como Co-Directora, Asesora y profesora de Idioma Ingles. Viene de Bainbridge Island en el estado de Washington, donde ha trabajado por más de 18 años como asesor y psicóloga escolar. Tiene una Maestría en Asesoría y Consejeros de la Universidad de Colorado, y una Maestría en Artes en Teatro Juvenil, y además Certificación de la Universidad de Washington. Tiene mucho interés en educación multicultural y en Centro América; hace cuatro años viajó de Bainbridge Island hasta la Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua en un minibús Volkswagon. Durante este viaje, estudió español aquí en Pana, y ha querido regresar desde entonces. También ha trabajado en teatro juvenil, terapia dramática, intervención de crisis, educación de padres de familia, aprendizaje de aventura, y guía espiritual. En Bainbridge Island, tiene una granjita orgánica donde crió sus dos hijos, ahora con 22 y 27 años.
Ruben Gonzalez – Technical Director, Primary Spanish
A certified primary school teacher in Guatemala, Rubén is a native of Rabinal, Baja Verapaz. A devotee of the progressive, interactive AMA pedagogical method, Rubén is literally revolutionizing Guatemalan education inside his classroom. He's combining the best of the Guatemalan, U.S., and AMA systems, forging bilingual learners who love to be in school. Father of three and husband of AMA Director Liz González, Rubén co-founded an English language institute in Rabinal before joining us here at AMA.
Rubén cuenta con una cédula docente guatemalteca, nació en Rabinal, Baja Verapaz. Es amante al método progresivo e interactivo de la enseñanza que usamos aquí en AMA. Rubén literalmente está revolucionando la educación Guatemalteca dentro de su aula. Rubén combina lo mejor de los sistemas guatemaltecos, estadounidenses y propios de AMA, así esta desarrollando a instructores bilingües a quienes les encanta estar en la escuela. Es padre de tres hijos, Rubén es esposo de la directora de A.M.A Liz González, con quien fundó un instituto de enseñanza del idioma inglés en Rabinal.
Kirk Jones – High School Math and Science
Kirk is a graduate of Bucknell University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. Our high school students are benefiting from his experience teaching upper level science and math at the AP level. A former US National Parks Ranger and a certified snowboard instructor, Kirk misses the cold weather. However, he is enjoying the tropical weather and fresh fruit! As an engineer, Kirk also helped to design and build a waste vegetable oil manufacturing facility in Burlington Vermont.
Kirk se graduó en la Universidad de Bucknell con una licenciatura de ciencias en ingeniería química. Nuestros alumnos de bachillerato están beneficiados de su experiencia enseñando ciencias y matemáticas en el nivel AP. Robin Smith – Junior High and High School History
Robin is new to AMA this year and is the 7-12th grade History teacher, 7th grade Math teacher, and Journalism co-teacher. This is her second year in Central America, as she taught nine subjects to sixth grade students last year in Juticalpa, Honduras. Robin's academic forte is in Political Science with a concentration in Latin American Relations and Gender Studies. She is an alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina and is an avid Tarheel basketball fan.
In her previous life in the United States, she was also a published fiction author and poet, accountant, and financial consultant. When she is not trying to expand the minds of her amazing students at AMA, she is busy cooking, baking, reading, writing, listening to NPR podcasts, doing yoga, eating, and traveling.
Robin vino a AMA este año y es la maestra de Historia de básico y bachillerato, Matemáticas para 1º básico, y co-maestra de Periodismo. Este es su segundo año en Centro América, porque dio nueve materias en una clase de sexto primaria el año pasado en Juticalpa, Honduras. Su profesión académica es en Ciencias Políticas con énfasis en Relaciones Latino-Americanas y Estudios de Géneros. Se graduó en la Universidad de Carolina del Norte en Chapel Hill, Carolina del Norte, y es una fanática de su equipo de básquetbol, los “Tarheels”.
En su vida previa en los EEUU, era una escritora y poetisa publicada, un perito contador, y consejera financiera. Cuando no está luchando para abrir las mentes de sus alumnos maravillosos de AMA, está ocupada con cocinar, hornear, leer, escribir, escuchar a podcasts de NPR, practicar yoga y viajar.
John Reardon – Junior High and High School Math and Science, Computers
John is AMA's new middle school Science and Math teacher, Computer's co-teacher, IT guru, coffee specialist, and the staff's baked goods provider. John spent last year teaching a variety of Science courses to middle school students in Juticalpa, Honduras. He is from the beautiful state of Oregon. His academic concentrations at Willamette University included Bio-Chemistry, with a focus on bioremediation. John has also helped begin and provided consulting for many small businesses in the United States, including a bookstore and many coffee shops. John is a skilled beginning photographer, and also spends his spare time playing sports, hiking, caving, traveling, and meeting new people.
John es el nuevo maestro de Ciencias y Matemáticas en básico, co-maestro de Computación, encargado de computadoras, especialista en café, y el proveedor de refacciones horneadas. John dio varios clases de Ciencias el año pasado a alumnos de básico en Juticalpa, Honduras. Es del lindo Estado de Oregon. Su especialidad académica en la Universidad de Willamette incluyó Química-Biología, con énfasis en remediación biológica. John también ha ayudado y dio consejos para pequeños negocios en los EEUU, incluyendo una librería y tiendas cafeteras. John es un fotógrafo fantástico, y también le gusta el deporte, caminatas, ir a cuevas, viajar y conocer nueva gente.
Leslie Fisher – Upper Primary, Computers
Hello, my name is Leslie Fisher, and I am the 5th/6th grade teacher at AMA. After teaching in the United States for 9 years I began looking for other opportunities to expand my skills; that's when I discovered AMA. I graduated from Indiana State University and received a Masters in Education from Butler University. I have been in Guatemala since July and have really enjoyed the experience so far. The lake, environment, and sun have been blessings coming from cold and snowy winters. I look forward to a year of fun, new experiences, and learning in the classroom.
Hola, mi nombre es Leslie Fisher, y soy la maestra de 5o y 6 o en AMA. Después de dar clases en los EEUU por 9 años, busqué otras oportunidades para extender mi experiencia docente, y encontré AMA. Me gradué en la Universidad de Indiana, y recibí una Maestría en Educación de la Universidad de Butler. He estado en Guatemala desde Julio, y realmente estoy disfrutando la experiencia. El lago, el ambiente, y el sol han sido bendiciones ya que vengo de un lugar con inviernos muy fríos y con mucha nieve. Espero un año de diversión, experiencias nuevas, y aprendizaje en el aula.
Erin Conway – Middle Primary, Computers
Welcome to a new school year! I have come to A.M.A. from the United States, originally Janesville, Wisconsin. I grew up on a dairy farm where my dad still lives. I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and am a licensed teacher for grades 1-6. I would like to express how happy I feel to be once again in Guatemala. Two years ago I finished three years of Peace Corps service in the village of Santa Catarina Palopó where I currently live. I worked in environmental education with the teachers and students in the two primary schools. I really enjoy working with Guatemalan schools and teachers, and I still have a library/literacy project in Santa Catarina, Ru K'ux Na'oj, la biblioteca comunitaria. In the U.S. I have worked with bilingual classrooms, 2/3 and 3/4, and this past year I earned my master's degree in Teacher Education. In my spare time I love reading, taking walks, knitting, and practicing Spanish and Kaqchikel with friends. Come and visit me in Santa Catarina anytime, but please don't ask me to cook anything.
Bienvenidos a un nuevo año escolar! Llegué a AMA de los Estados Unidos, originalmente Janesville, Wisconsin. Vivía en una granja lechera, donde mi papá todavía vive. Asistí a la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison y soy Licenciada en Educación Primaría, grados 1-6. Quisiera expresar la alegría que siento estar de regreso en Guatemala. Hace 2 años terminé 3 años de servicio como voluntaria del Cuerpo de Paz en el pueblo de Santa Catarina Palopó, donde ahora vivo. Trabajaba en la educación ambiental con los docentes y alumnos de las dos escuelas primarias. Sinceramente, a mí me encanta trabajar con las escuelas y docentes guatemaltecos, y todavía tengo un proyecto de lectoescritura/biblioteca en Santa Catarina, Ru K'ux Na'oj, la biblioteca comunitaria. En los Estados Unidos he trabajado principalmente con aulas bilingües, 2/3 y 3/4, y el año pasado cerré mi estudio de Maestría en la Formación Docente. En mi tiempo libre, a mí me fascina leer, hacer caminatas, hacer tricot, y practicar español y kaqchikel con mis amigos. Venga a visitarme en Santa Catarina en cualquier momento, pero no me pida que cocine nada!
Kimberly Brown – Lower Primary, Junior High School Art
Kimberly is originally from Cape Cod, MA, where she continues to enjoy most summers visiting family and friends, teaching art classes to children, hiking, spending time on the beach and sailing. She has taught first through fifth grades in Massachusetts, California, and Costa Rica, and is currently teaching first graders at AMA as well as 7th and 8th grade art. She holds her Bachelors degree in Sociology/Gender Studies and her Masters degree in Bilingual/ESL/Multicultural Education. When Kimberly isn’t teaching she enjoys exploring different art forms with her partner Nicolas, traveling, writing, reading, vegan cooking, and yoga.
Originario de Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Kimberly sigue disfrutando vacaciones allí con su familia y amigos, enseñando arte a niños, haciendo caminatas, pasando su tiempo en la playa y navegando en bote de vela. Ella ha enseñado de primero hasta quinto grado en Massachusetts, California, y Costa Rica, y ahora es la maestra de primer grado en AMA, y la maestra de arte de 1º y 2º básico. Tiene una Licenciatura en Sociología y Estudios de Género, y una Maestría en Educación Bilingüe, Inglés como Segunda Lenguaje y Multiculturalidad. Cuando Kimberly no está en el aula, le gusta explorar diferentes tipos de arte con su pareja Nicolás, viajar, escribir, leer, cocina vegetariana y yoga.
Su Wegenkittl - Kindergarten, High School Art History
A native of Austria, Su speaks perfect English…with a perfect Australian accent! A certified English language teacher, Su comes to AMA with years of experience as a Kindergarten teacher here in Panajachel. This year she also puts her graphic design courses to work teaching our new High School Art History course.
Besides having prepared scores of youngsters for first grade, Su has also worked as an English and German teacher. Her own daughters are already learning to speak in three languages, which is not a bad start for future AMA students.
Originaria de Austria, Su, habla el inglés perfectamente… ¡con un acento perfecto de Australia! Ella cuenta con una Certificación en la Enseñanza del idioma Inglés para principiantes, y llega al colegio AMA con años de experiencia como maestra de Kindergarten aquí en Panajachel. Este año también va a poner en uso su formación en diseño gráfico para enseñar nuestro nuevo curso en bachillerato “Historia del Arte.”
Más allá de haber preparado a muchos niños para primer grado, Su ha trabajado como maestra de idiomas inglés y alemán. Sus propias hijas ya aprendieron hablar en tres idiomas, lo que es un buen principio para una estudiante futura de AMA.
Esthela Gomez – Kindergarten Assistant
Esthela is our wonderful Kindergarten Assistant. She is fluent in three languages: English, Spanish and Kaqchikel, and has been working in our Kindergarten since its inception. She not only helps Su throughout the day, but also teaches the Spanish and Kaqchikel lessons to the children.
Esthela es nuestra maravillosa asistente en Preprimaria. Habla tres idiomas: Inglés, Español y Kaqchikel, y ha trabajado en nuestra Preprimaria desde su inicio. No solamente ayuda a Su durante el día, sino también es la maestra de Español y Kaqchikel en el aula.
Juan Francisco Guzmán – High School, Spanish Literature and Composition
Profe is famous in the Sololá area as an inspiring, demanding, life-changing teacher. He is also famous worldwide as an exhibited artist who is one of Guatemala's most celebrated painters. He has also won the national prize for literature for his writing. Juan Francisco teaches grade-level Spanish classes in the High School, and is the director of AMA's Spanish language arts curriculum
Profe es famoso en Sololá y sus alrededores por ser un maestro que inspira, que exige, y que cambia las vidas de sus alumnos. También es famoso a nivel mundial por su arte, siendo uno de los pintores más celebres de Guatemala. Además, ha ganado el Premio Nacional de Literatura por uno de sus cuentos. Juan Francisco enseña clases de español en bachillerato, y es el Director del Currículum de Idioma Español de AMA.
Manuel Waelti – Junior High School, Spanish Language and Literature
Originally from Guatemala, Manual has been part of AMA’s team in different roles since his return several years ago from more than 25 years of living and teaching in Europe. Fluent in six languages, Manuel puts his years of International Baccalaureate experience to work in the junior high school Spanish program. In his spare time, Manuel also enjoys music and travel.
Originario de Guatemala, Manuel ha sido parte del equipo de AMA en diferentes papeles desde su regreso hace algunos años luego de vivir más de 25 años en Europa. Habla con fluidez en seis idiomas, Manuel usa su gran experiencia en Bachillerato Internacional para trabajar en el programa de Idioma Español con los alumnos de básico. En su tiempo libre, a Manuel también le gusta la música y viajar.
Nicolas Ramos – Accounting
Nicolas is not only AMA’s accountant, but also added to his experience teaching the ninth grade the ins and outs of basic accounting. And he is enjoying teaching! Nicolas and his wife have just recently welcomed their first child, a girl. Congratulations!
Nicolas no solamente es el Perito Contador de AMA, pero también empezó el año pasado a dar clases de contabilidad a los alumnos de 3o básico. Y le encanta! Recientemente, Nicolás y su esposo dieron la bienvenida a su primera hija. Felicitaciones!
Annette McGlynn Garcia – Physical Education, Coaching
Annette is AMA’s athletic guru, teaching our preschoolers how to swim, older children how to play sports and be team players, and our high schoolers how to kayak and drive! A native of Australia, Annette has lived in Guatemala for over 20 years and raised her children here. She is also AMA’s inspirational basketball coach, leading teams to victory many times over.
Annette es el gurú atlético de AMA. Ella enseña a los de preprimaria cómo nadar, a los grandes cómo practicar deportes y ser parte de un equipo, y a los de bachillerato cómo manejar desde un kayak hasta un carro! Es nativa de Australia, Annette ha vivido en Guatemala por más de 20 años, y crió a su familia aquí. También es la entrenadora inspiracional de básquetbol, llevando equipos a coronarse campeones muchas veces.
Mark Weinstein – Music
Mark is a joyful member of AMA’s staff, leading children to sing, clap and smile their way through the day. Mark joined the AMA team last year as its music teacher, adding this experience to his years of playing music locally and teaching many children around the lake to strum the guitar.
Mark es un miembro jubiloso del personal de AMA, llevando a los niños a cantar, aplaudir y sonreír durante el día. Mark vino al equipo de AMA el año pasado como maestro de música, añadiendo esta experiencia a sus años de tocar música por todos lados, y enseñando a muchos niños a tocar la guitarra.
Nancy Lopez – Secretary
Nancy is the linchpin in the AMA machine, making sure teachers are well-supplied, lunches are ordered, medicine and advice is dispensed, files are in order, and generally keeping everything under control. And she does it all with a smile! Nancy is originally from the coast, but moved to Pana from Retalhuleu many years ago. Currently finishing her studies for a law degree, when Nancy has free time, she loves to cook, spend time with friends and family, and run with her dogs on the beach.
Nancy es la parte indispensable de la máquina de AMA, asegurando que los maestros tengan sus útiles, almuerzos, medicina y consejos dispensados, que los archivos estén en orden, y ayudando a que todo esté bajo control en general. Y lo hace con una gran sonrisa! Nancy nació en la costa, pero vino a Pana de Retaluheu hace muchos años. Pablo Castro – Custodian
Pablo is our in-house jack of all trades, and helps to keep everything running smoothly. He keeps the school clean, builds and fixes, waters and plants, moves and delivers all day long. Originally from Pana, Pablo is also finishing his studies to be an electrician.
Pablo es el trabajador de mantenimiento, y nos ayuda a mantener todo bajo control. El ayuda en todos lados: a limpiar, construir, arreglar, regar, sembrar, mover y entregar todo el día. Originario de Pana, Pablo también está en el proceso de terminar sus estudios de electricista.
