Staff
Director -- John T. Way
John Way (also known as J.T. Way) received his Ph.D. from Yale University, and has earned an M.A. and M.Phil. from Yale, as well as an M.A. from Tulane University. His research covers culture and globalization in Guatemala during the 20th century. John has won Fulbright, Mellon Foundation and Yale Center for International and Area Studies grants. He has taught in various elementary, junior high and high school programs, as well as at the University of Arizona's Study Abroad Program at CIRMA in Antigua, Guatemala, and at LaGuardia Community College, Tulane University and Yale University in the USA. Education and love of learning are John's passions, and every day he's thankful to be living in Panajachel and building AMA.
John Way (apodo J.T., en inglés) recibió el título de Doctorado de la Universidad de Yale. Ya ha terminado dos títulos de maestría en Yale, y ganó otra maestría de la Universidad de Tulane. Sus investigaciones se tratan de la cultura y la globalización en Guatemala durante el siglo XX. John ha sido premiado con becas Fulbright, Mellon y Yale Center for International and Area Studies. Ha enseñado en varios programas de primaria, básico y bachillerato, en el programa de estudios afuera del país de la Universidad de Arizona/CIRMA en Antigua Guatemala, y también en las siguientes universidades en los EE.UU.: LaGuardia Community College, Tulane University y Yale University. Master Teacher, Upper Elementary, & Language Arts Chair - Elizabeth González
Liz comes to AMA with sixteen years of teaching experience, and has a Masters of Science in Teaching from The New School for Social Research in New York City. She’s taught in New York and Baltimore, as well as right here in Guatemala—in Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, where she and her husband Rubén founded an English language center.
The mother of two, an avid reader, and a native of New York City, Liz is a creative teacher who fosters a sense of independence, responsibility and accountability in the classroom.
Liz tiene 16 años de experiencia docente, y cuenta con una Maestría en la Pedagogía de la universidad “New School for Social Research” en Nueva York. Ha enseñado en Nueva York y Baltimore, y también aquí en Guatemala, en Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, en donde ella y su marido Rubén fundaron un instituto de enseñanza del idioma inglés.
Liz es la madre de dos hijos y viene originalmente de la ciudad de Nueva York. Ella es una maestra creativa que desarrolla un sentido de independencia y responsabilidad en su aula.
Lower Elementary - Jessica Fong
This is not the first time Jessica has been in Guatemala! She visited every year during her childhood with her Guatemalen parents who grew up in the department of Santa Rosa. She has lovely memories of chasing chickens and befriending all the stray dogs in the neighborhood.
Jessica earned a B.A. in education and social policy from Northwestern University and has most recently spent 2 years working at the Chicago Children's Museum. She is passionate about innovative and child-centered education and is incredibly excited to join the AMA family!
¡Esta no es la primera vez que Jessica ha estado en Guatemala! Ella visitaba cada ano durante su niñez con sus padres Guatemaltecos quien crecieron en el departamento de Santa Rosa. Ella tiene memorias preciosas de siguiendo las gallinas y haciéndose amigos con los perros callejeros en la vecindad.
Jessica gano su licenciatura con concentraciones en educación y política social de la Universidad de Northwestern y mas reciente ha pasado dos anos trabajando en el Museo de niños de Chicago. Ella es apasionada del método innovador y centrado en el niño de la enseñanza y esta increíblemente emocionada de ser parte de la familia de AMA!
Math and Music Enrichment - David Sherman
David holds an M.A. in Special Education from the University of New Mexico, and has been teaching for nine years. Most recently, he has taught inclusion classes, integrating students of different ages and abilities. A performing musician, David has also been teaching music since 1996—an activity he’ll also be running at AMA. David believes that the similarities between math and music are undeniable, and for his Master’s thesis, developed an elementary curriculum that integrates music and math standards.
He's also a devoted soccer player and former middle-school soccer coach. David will be expecting the most of his students on the field and off!.
David tiene una Maestría en la Educación Especial de la Universidad de Nueva México, y cuenta con nueve años de experiencia en la aula. Recientemente, ha enseñado clases especiales de “inclusión,” que integran a estudiantes de varias edades y aptitudes. Además, David es un músico profesional, y ha enseñado cursos de música desde 1996. Por eso, es encargado de nuestra programa de música en el colegio. Durante sus estudios postgraduados, David diseño un currículum que combine conceptos matemáticos y musicales.
David es también afán del fútbol y ha servido de entrenador de un equipo a nivel básico. ¡David va a exigir lo mejor de sus estudiantes tanto en el campo como en la aula!
Junior High & Language Arts Enrichment - Wibke Rausch
Wibke has a teaching certificate from the University of Wales, and, prior to joining the AMA team in 2006, was working in England with students of all ages. A native of Germany who’s dead fluent in English, Wibke is one of AMA’s most well rounded teachers. She’s taught the gifted as well as students with special needs, and has experience with core curriculum classes as well as languages, health and visual and performing arts at a wide variety of grade levels.
Wibke also comes with a special interest in the region; her Masters degree is in Postcolonial Politics in Latin America.
Wibke tiene un título en la pedagogía de la Universidad de Galés, y, antes de haberse juntado al equipo de AMA en 2006, ha enseñado a estudiantes de todas edades en Inglaterra. Originalmente de Alemania, Wibke es cien por ciento fluida en inglés, y es una maestra que cuenta con experiencia amplia y diversa. Ha enseñado tanto a estudiantes superdotados como a los con necesidades especiales, y cuenta con experiencia en todo el pensum de estudios y también en lenguajes, salud y artes plásticas y dramáticas en primaria, básico y bachillerato.
A Wibke también le interesa especialmente nuestra bella región. Tiene una Maestría en la Política Postcolonial en la América Latina.
Junior High & High School - Daniel Elliott
Daniel is the AMA teacher most likely to ask for a “wee bit” of something, native of Northern Ireland as he is. Daniel won his Post Graduate Certification in Education from the University of Wales, and joined AMA in 2006 from The Malling School in Kent in the United Kingdom. An avid historian and keen economist who loves to use a wide variety of activities in his classroom, Daniel stimulates multiple intelligences using visual, auditory and kinesthetic exercises.
Beyond his experience as a history teacher in Kent, Daniel has worked with children with emotional and behavioral difficulties in Worcestershire.
Daniel viene de Irlanda del Norte, y por eso usa palabras en el inglés como “wee,” que en su región quiere decir “chiquitito.” Daniel ganó su certificado postgraduado en la pedagogía de la Universidad de Galés, y llegó a AMA del colegio “The Malling School” en Inglaterra en 2006. Un historiador y economista devoto que ama usar una variedad amplia de actividades en su aula, Daniel estimula las múltiples inteligencias por medio de ejercicios visuales, auditorios, y kinestéticos.
Más allá de su experiencia como maestro de la historia en Kent, Daniel ha trabajado con jóvenes con problemas emocionales y sociales en Worcestershire.
Junior High & High School - Joe Troyer
Joe is famous at AMA both for his love of sports, which he shares with the kids on a daily basis, and for his topnotch organizational skills—one of the many aptitudes he inculcates in adolescents embarking on their high school careers. Joe is a certified teacher in the state of Michigan, USA, and has a B.A. with concentrations in history, economics, political science and geography.
Besides having experience in Americorps as a junior high teacher in the inner city, Joe has also taught English as a Second Language to at-risk youth. He finds AMA’s student body delightful!
Aquí en el colegio AMA, Joe es famoso tanto por su amor a los deportes (lo que comparte con los niños cada día) como por su genio en el campo de la organización, lo que es unas de las múltiples aptitudes que enseña a los jóvenes en los principios de los estudios a nivel de bachillerato. Joe es un maestro certificado en el estado de Michigan, EE.UU., y tiene una licenciatura con concentraciones en historia, economía, ciencia política y geografía.
En Estados Unidos, Joe trabajaba de voluntario con el programa Americorps en barrios marginales de cuidades con jóvenes en riesgo. También ha servido a esa población como maestro de inglés para no hablantes. ¡Dice que son encantadores los alumnos de AMA!
English-as-a-Second-Language - Jule Türke
Jule graduated from the University of Frankfurt, Germany, in English and American Studies focusing on Sociolinguistics and Postcolonial Literature in English. She spent several semesters abroad, in the United States and in England.
For her Master's thesis she researched the situation of students who receive education in a language that is not their mother tongue and in particular the education of Spanish-speaking students in the United States. She is taking this interest further by teaching students of all ages that have Spanish as their first language in this English-speaking school in Guatemala.
After working with the youngest AMA students in Kindergarten during the first semester, she will now work in language enrichment for AMA's English-as-a-Second-Language-students.
Technical Director, Primary Spanish & Spanish as a Second Language - Rubén González
A certified primary school teacher in Guatemala, Rubén is a native of Rabinal, Baja Verapaz. A devotee of the progressive, interactive AMA pedagogical method, Rubén is literally revolutionizing Guatemalan education inside his classroom.
He's combining the best of the Guatemalan, U.S., and AMA systems, forging bilingual learners who love to be in school. Father of two and husband of AMA teacher Liz González, Rubén co-founded an English language institute in Rabinal before joining us here at AMA.
Rubén cuenta con una cédula docente aquí en Guatemala, y se nació en Rabinal, Baja Verapaz. Es muy afán del método progresivo y interactivo de la enseñanza que usamos aquí en AMA. Rubén literalmente está revolucionando la educación Guatemalteca dentro de su aula.
Rubén combina lo mejor de los sistemas guatemaltecos, estadounidenses y propios a AMA, así desarrollando a enseñadores bilingües a quienes les encanta estar en la escuela. El padre de dos hijos, Rubén es esposo de AMA profesora Liz González, con quien fundó un instituto de enseñanza del idioma inglés en Rabinal.
Kindergarten - Su Wegenkittl
A native of Austria, Su speaks perfect English…with a perfect Australian accent! A certified English language teacher, Su comes to AMA with years of experience as a Kindergarten teacher here in Panajachel.
Besides having prepared scores of youngsters for first grade, Su has also worked as an English and German teacher. Her own daughter, a toddler, is already learning to speak in three languages, which is not a bad start for a future AMA student.
Originaria de Austria, Su habla el inglés perfectamente…¡con un acento perfecto de Australia! Su cuenta con una certificación en la enseñanza del idioma inglés para no hablantes, y llega al colegio AMA con años de experiencia como maestra de Kindergarten aquí en Panajachel.
Más allá de haber preparado a muchos niños para primer grado, Su ha trabajado como maestra de idiomas inglés y alemán. Su propia hija, una bebé, ya aprende hablar en tres idiomas, lo que es un buen principio para una estudiante futura de AMA.
Upper Grades Science and Math - Anton Volkonskiy
Anton Volkonskiy is AMA's resident Russian scientist. Anton is a chemist trained at the University of Moscow who had a bad habit of blowing up his mother's kitchen when he was a child. Anton is also a computer and information technology specialist who worked for many years in this field as a consultant to major corporations in Denmark. In his classes, Anton works to develop a holistic understanding of science and math, teaching students how these subjects apply to life.
Anton Volkonskiy es el científico ruso de AMA. Un químico entrenado en la Universidad de Moscú, Anton, durante su niñez, tenía el vicio de hacer explosiones en la cocina de su mamá. Además, Anton es especialista en la computación y tecnología de información quien muchos años trabajó en eso campo de asesor a grandes corporaciones en Dinamarca. En sus clases, Anton se esfuerza desarrollar un entendimiento holístico de las ciencias y matemáticas, enseñándoles a los estudiantes la manera en que esos temas se aplican a la vida.
Upper Grades, German - Sabine Völcker
Sabine has been a Guatemala resident since 1987, and has worked as a German teacher in both Guatemala City and in Panajachel. Sabine is the owner and director of Pana's popular art gallery, La Galería, and is prepping AMA students to take the exams necessary to continue on to university in Germany or other German-speaking lands.
Sabine ha vivido en Guatemala desde 1987, y ha trabajado como maestra de alemán tanto en la ciudad capital como en Panajachel. Sabine es la dueña y directora de La Galería, una sala popular de exhibiciones artísticas en Pana. Está preparando sus estudiantes AMA para un futuro en las universidades de alemania.
Upper Grades, Spanish Literature and Composition - "Profe" Juan Francisco Guzmán
Profe is famous in the Sololá area as an inspiring, demanding, life-changing teacher. He is also famous worldwide as an exhibited artist who is one of Guatemala's most celebrated painters. He has also won the national prize for literature for his writing. Juan Francisco teaches grade-level Spanish classes in the Junior High and High School, and is the director of AMA's Spanish language arts curriculum
Profe es famoso en Sololá y sus alrededores por ser un maestro que inspira, que exija, y que cambia las vidas de sus alumnos. También es famoso a nivel mundial por su arte, siendo uno de los pintores más celebrados de Guatemala. Además, ha ganado el premio nacional de literatura por uno de sus cuentos. Juan Francisco enseña clases de español en básico y bachillerato, y es el director del currículum de estudios españoles de AMA.
Advisory Board, Art & Activities - Dave Schaefer
Dave Schaefer, from San Diego, is a certified teacher in the state of California, but he loves living in Guatemala. The hallmark of Dave's teaching is a hands-on, interactive approach. Dave's years of experience in the classroom and his endless enthusiasm bring academics to life. Dave's other interests range from soccer and art to Mayan culture and the Kaqchikel language.
Dave Schaefer, de San Diego, es un maestro certificado en el estado de California, pero él ama vivir en Guatemala. El sello de la enseñaza de Dave es una metodología interactiva y práctica. Los demás intereses de Dave incluyen jugar fútbol y arte, y estudiar la cultura Maya y el idioma Kaqchikel.
Advisory Board, Theater & Activities - Andy Hauty
Andy Hauty joins AMA from the Greenfield Center School--an innovative, excellent school in Greenfield, Massachusetts, USA. He has a Masters in Education and some 15 years of teaching experience. He makes learning come alive with hands-on activities and is himself also a builder. In 2005-06 Andy directed the school play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and followed it up in 2006-07 with The Producers. Andy is a member of AMA's advisory International Educational Board.
Andy Hauty llega a AMA del Greenfield Center School--un colegio innovador y excelente ubicado en Greenfield, Massachusetts, USA. Tiene una Maestría en Educación y cuenta con unos 15 años de experiencia docente. Le da vida a los estudios con actividades prácticas, y es un constructor también. Durante el ciclo escolar 2005-06 el fue director de nuestra obra dramática, A Midsummer Night's Dream, y en 2006-07 de The Producers. Andy es un miembro de la Junta Internacional Educativa de AMA.
Director of Operations & School Secretary - Jan Clarke
Jan comes to AMA with years of experience in Australia and New Zealand. In her varied career she has not only directed an English-language school in Guatemala, but has run numerous community theater groups, children's activity centers, and a hotel here and there as well. A certified teacher, a genuine grandmother, and an organizational genius, Jan is the "glue" that holds AMA together.
Jan trae a AMA el producto de años de experencia en Australia y Nueva Zelanda. En su carera ha dirigido tanto un colegio internacional en Guatemala como varios grupos comunitarios de teatro, centros de actividades para niños, y unos hoteles (si ya no fuera bastante!). Una maestra certificada, una abuela, y un genio de organización, Jan es la clave del funcionamiento cotidiano de AMA.
